Information Report - Wright Flyer

Wright Flyer

Introduction

The Wright Flyer plan was the first successful heavier than-air powered aircraft to fly. Its first flight was on December 17, 1903. There were other names like the Flyer 1 and the 1903 Flyer. It’s last flight was on December 17 , 1903.

Who built it?

The Wright Flyer was designed and constructed by the Wright Brothers Wilbur and Orville who were to American Brothers inventors, and aviation pioneers. Orville was the oldest out of both of them which he was born in August, 9 , 1871 in Dayton  Ohio and his brother Wilbur the youngest one was born in April, 16, 1867.

Design

The Wright Brothers Wilbur and Orville built the aircraft in 1903 using giant spruce wood. The wings were made with a 1-in-20 camber. They chose their employee Charlie Taylor to build a new design from scratch, effectively not skilfully made gasoline engine. They used a sprocket chain drive from a bicycle that powered the twin propellers.

The length of the Wright Flyer was 21 feet (6 m) 1 in (6.43 m).
The wingspan of the plane was 40 feet (12 m) 4 in (12.31 m).
The height of the Wright Flyer was 9 feet (3 m) 0 in (2.74 m).
The maximum speed of the plane was 30 mph (48 km an hour). The total distance the wright flyer plane has made was 1,500 feet (0.45km).6

Parts of the aircraft

The rudders are at the back of the Wright Flyer plane. It changes the Yaw. It moves side to side. The rudders are moved surfaces which are controlled by the pilot. The propellers are at the back of the plane as well next to the rudder. The propeller generates thrust. The wing tips are warp to change Roll. It rotates the body of the plane. The propellers of the Wright Flyer plane are long, thin  twisted pieces of wood which spins. These are propellers are at the back of the plane next to the ruddera. The motor(gasoline engine) Drives the propellers. The motor is on one wings which is on the wing at the bottom. The elevators are at the front connected the the Fuselage (body). It changes the pitch which goes up and down. The elevators are a pair of movable wings which are controlled by the pilot. The Fuselage (Body) is at the front of the aircraft connected to the elevator. It Hold things together. It carries the payload as well. The wings of the wright flyer generates lift to make the aircraft go up.

Events - Flight

The wright brothers flew the wright flyer plane 4 times at Kitty Hawk, North California on December 17, 1903. Wilbur's first flight at Kitty Hawk lasted 12 seconds for a total distance of 120 feet (36.5 m). The wright brothers both took turns flying and made a little low altitude flights that day at Kitty Hawk. The last flight at Kitty Hawk was by Wilbur and he went 825 feet high (260 m) in 59 seconds which is much longer than each of the previous flights of 120, 175 and 200 feet high.

L.I: To write an information report / explanation about your Flight self inquiry task.

This week for writing we had to either write a information report or a explanation about our bird , plane or rocket we choose for inquiry. I did a plane and it is called the Wright Flyer. It was designed and constructed by the Wright Brothers Wilbur and Orville. I learnt a lot about the Wright Flyer's plane. It was a bit difficult to right my information report but lucky I had my planning that I did that helped me. I think for next time I should write an explanation text of the Wright Flyer's plane.
